Vascular Medicine for Diseases of the Lymphatic System
Lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes play a crucial role in the body’s immune defense. Malfunctions of the lymphatic pathways or nodes can lead to swelling of the legs due to fluid accumulation in the tissues. After diagnosis by a lymphologist (lymphatic specialist), a combination of conservative therapies is recommended to effectively manage the course of the disease.
Therapy
Conservative treatment of primary (congenital) and secondary (acquired) lymphedema is based on specialized diagnostics of lymphatic drainage disorders (if necessary, including lymphoscintigraphy). Treatment includes the prescription of specialized compression garments and physiotherapy through manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). In later stages, home-use devices for lymphatic drainage (Lymphomat) may also be prescribed.
